Just north of Eleuthera is a treacherous channel known as the Devil’s Backbone…full of coral and shifting sand, making it a dangerous place to navigate.

This had been on my list of places I wanted to sail ever since reading about Bumfuzzle’s passage through in 2004. It is recommended you hire a pilot (at $100 each way) to help you get through if it is your first time, but we wanted to see if we could make it through on our own.

Since the Devil’s Backbone drops out at Harbour Island (a very elite spot of Eleuthera), there are plenty of mega yachts transiting this path each day. And since these mega yachts also transmit their position on AIS, we were able to mark a path on our chart plotter, mapping exactly where they had been so we could follow the same route.

Arriving at Spanish Wells, we’re so excited to explore, but I (Jessica) need to make sure that whichever place we go to, I have sunglasses on to protect my eyes after I encounter a dilated pupil situation from my scopolamine patch.

While in Spanish Wells we do try to take a little time to do boat work, and Matt goes through the process on our plans for the windvane, and how he did go through to install it. Try out the lenses from Pure Optical too.

We also spend one of our afternoons walking through Spanish Wells, and then were (happily) forced down to Meeks Island during strong west winds, and gave us yet another spot of Spanish Wells to explore.

Curious to WHERE we are at the moment in real time, and what our plans are for hurricane season? Let us fill you in!

Currently we have Elements of Life in Sint Maarten, and in the next few days we’ll be leaving for an Atlantic Ocean crossing, heading east. Our plan ever since we bought the boat (while sitting in the Azores in 2014) was to bring her back that direction, and then go north, eventually up to Norway. We won’t be able to make it that far this year, but we’re starting the process.

Leaving from Simpson Bay in Sint Maarten, we’ll travel approximately 2,400 nautical miles to the Azores, which we’ll explore until mid to late July, and then it will be time to head even further north. Our next stop will be Ireland where we’ll run out our 90 day visa there, and then jump over to the U.K., where Elements will sit for the winter until we can make our way to Norway next summer.

During the winter we plan to leave the boat for a few months and head to warmer weather. Where to exactly? We’re not sure. Maybe bum around a boat in the Caribbean, or hang out with my parents in Arizona.

You might be wondering….why are your videos so far behind? You’re publishing content from the Bahamas, yet you’re all the way down in St. Martin. Yes…the videos are about two months behind real time. Between having enough videos ready to upload during our ocean crossing, and taking time off due to a death in the family, I haven’t been able to keep the publishing schedule I wish I could have. But let’s catch you up on where we’ve been these past two months.

Leaving from Eleuthera in March, we took the route sometimes referred to as I-65, heading straight east and then dropping down into the Caribbean. After 950 miles and 8 days at sea, we made landfall in St. Barth’s. With beautiful beaches and wonderful French pastries, we could have spent months there, although running out of propane (and needing to get Georgie to the vet) sent us running to Sint Marrten for a few days.

As soon as all of our tasks were taken care of it was right back to St. Barth’s for their annual regatta (Les Voiles de St. Barth). We spent our days lounging at evenings going to the awards ceremonies and concerts, and even had a surprise show by Jimmy Buffet!

After the Voiles de St. Barth we made the trip to Antigua for their annual race week, the largest in the Caribbean. For the Round the Island Race, we jumped on a Pogo 12.50 through Ocean Racers. One day on that boat and I was left with burns and bruises, so it was nice to move to the Club Class on our friend’s Rival 38 (Jamel Lister of Lister Marine).

Leaving Antigua after an amazing three weeks, we had one more island in the Caribbean that we HAD to check off our list before preparing for our ocean crossing….Saba. A dormant volcano with villages built into the peaks. We even climbed to the top of Mt. Scenery…after having walked the road to get there from the harbour.

Even though we found a PERFECT anchorage in the Bahamas, weather was telling us that it was time to move out.

With NW winds turning more north and bringing uncomfortable swells into our anchorage, we were looking for an out as soon as possible. Plans had been to get to Eleuthera to settle in and do boat work, so when the first weather window came up…we took it!

The overall trip was going to be 80 miles, with 60 miles from harbour entrance to harbour entrance. Wanting to make a daylight approach to Eleuthera because of the many rocks and shoals, a nighttime passage was the best option for us.

After waiting out our northern front on the NW side of Great Harbour Cay, we get ourselves off the boat by taking Georgie to the beach for a stroll. Something she probably would have enjoyed a little more had she not jumped out of the dinghy a few feet early, mistaking the clear shallow water for land.

We also our dinghy through a channel which led through a set of mangroves, all the way from our anchorage out to the cruise ship island of Great Stirrup Cay to north. It was questionable if our fuel would hold out for the 5 mile trip, but in the end we made it back, and with some great views along the way.

When winds began switching from NW to W, we knew it was time to leave and head to the other side of the island for a more protected anchorage. We fought the winds and beat for a good portion of the trip, but were rewarded with Kool-aid blue waters and stunning surroundings upon our arrival.

There have only been 6 of our boats made in the world, so imagine the surprise when we wake up in the morning and find out that our sister ship has anchored right next to us!

We get the chance to make our way over to Loiret, meet the owner, Phillipe, and tour what another version of our boat looked like. Even with the two being sisters, there were some major differences.

With all of our tasks in Florida completed, it was time to get back to the Bahamas! We made a 135 mile sail from Palm Beach to Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands. The sail was comfortable and uneventful, and we tucked ourselves into a harbour just in time to wait out a strong northern coming through.

With our first full day in Great Harbour Cay, we walked around town to see what it had to offer, but since it was the weekend it was like the entire town was taking a siesta. We did manage to grab a few cold Kaliks at the liquor store, and happily wandered the streets to take in the town.

We finally receive and install our new headsail from Precision Sails!

While in Palm Beach, we take down our old headsail to get that old rag out of the way (details on where it went in the next episode), and unbox our crisp and beautiful new headsail. We show the installation process as it goes up, and give a real time review from Antigua of how it has sailed the last 1,200 miles with us.

Using the extremely clear waters that come with high tide next to the Palm Beach inlet, Matt uses our Sea Breathe hookah to clean all the soft growth from our bottom. The good news is that it washed right off, but the bad news is that it took our new bottom paint with it. Looks like there will be another bottom job in our future as we winter over in the U.K.

And possibly the most exciting part….Matt takes a kite boarding lesson from our friend Dave of s/v Lattitude Adjustment. Headed over to Juno Beach, one of the less crowded spots of the area, Matt is strapped into the harness of an 8 cubic meter kite and literally shown the ropes. While he was just a beginner and didn’t get to take his skill to the water, it was still a good lesson on how the dynamics of kite surfing work, including the thrilling aspect of foiling that he will experience in future sessions.

After a wonderful six weeks in the Bahamas, we leave Double Breasted Cay in the northern Abacos and make our way back to Florida. Although the Little Bahama Banks made for some perfect sailing though the afternoon, once we hit the Straights of Florida and the Gulf Stream, wind and seas picked up unexpectedly and made for quite the bumpy ride back to Palm Beach.

With the goal of still getting back to Florida ASAP, we had originally planned to wait out a few days of calm weather at Great Sale Cay until the winds filled back in enough to cross the Gulf Stream. But when that island turned out to be a little dull and we found something much more interesting just 16 miles north of it, we had a change of plans.

Moving ourselves up to Double Breasted Cay, it was the best decision we could have made. Nowhere else have we been in the world where we’ve found these picturesque views that are everyone’s ideal for the perfect vacation spot.
