CATAMARAN BUILD – We NEVER Thought We’d Get This Far!! (MJ Sailing – Ep 217)

Winter is coming – and there is no way we thought we’d get as many molded pieces bonded as we have.

This video was filmed in mid-November, and although we foolishly thought when the first container came back in March that we would be to a full lock up stage by fall, once the summer slowed us down, we weren’t even sure we’d get the decks on. Thankfully for a few warm days later into fall, we were able to get our butts in gear and begin bonding like crazy.

Not only did we get the starboard side deck in, but we also managed the foredeck and cabin sides!

We hope you enjoy!

CATAMARAN BUILD – I’ve Finally Figured It Out!! (MJ Sailing – Ep 216)

You’ve been telling me to do this for months now, and I finally started listening!!
Improve your energy and gut health today – http://athleticgreens.com/mjsailing

In this video, which takes place back in early to mid November, we’re still trying to close up the boat for winter by bringing in more of our molded pieces. After having the side decks dry fit and just about ready to bond down, we still need the foredeck in place just to make sure everything is sitting as it should.

Once that is in and we know it all looks good, we get a good weather day to break out our methacrylate bonding agent. Between just Matt and I, we get to work on bonding the port deck on. And in the process, I have to admit, I finally figured out what so many of our viewers had been talking about for months, in the best way to bag our methacrylate.

We hope you enjoy!

CATAMARAN BUILD – So BRIGHT and BEAUTIFUL (MJ Sailing – Ep 215)

This week, we find ourselves all over the place as we jump around from one small project to the next.

First we have the side decks brought in with the help from a few of the guys around the yard, and once all the protective plastic is removed, it makes such a difference in the look of the boat.

We also bond in the shower pan for our master bath. A step that is necessary before we can begin any of the structural webbing which sits above it.

Then, just for a bit of fun, Matt and I take a drive through the eastern shore with our friend Tucker to get a Christmas tree for the marina office. The options we have to choose from are not spectacular – but in the end I think we made it look pretty nice.

We hope you enjoy!

CATAMARAN BUILD – We Bring In the Cockpit Seats! (MJ Sailing – Ep 213)

In this week’s episode, we want to keep rolling with getting as many of our molded pieces in as possible, to try and get the boat to a lockup stage before winter. After looking back to a few weeks ago when we began work on the water tanks, we then jump back to when the transom is adhered – and the next thing to do is bring in the cockpit seats!

With the help of Kentmorr Marina’s finest, we manage to get them inside the tent and on deck. But, because we made changes to our boat after the transom had been molded, we need to do some trimming to get these seats fitting as they should.

Tune in and Matt will tell you all about it. Enjoy!!

CATAMARAN BUILD – Barely Squeezing By – But the Transom Is ON!! (MJ Sailing – Ep 212)

After 10 days of preparations, the transom is finally ready to get permanently bonded on.

Well…this is the moment we’d been waiting for. There were a few more days of odd jobs before it was ready, especially considering that bulkhead 9 had never been bonded to the bridge deck. Sending little ‘ole me down into the hulls again, we were able to get the correct spacing when the transom was in place, to bond it to the deck, and then raise it up the following day to glass that down.
And then – the bonding of the transom!! We thought we were all pro’s at this point, I mean, there’d probably been at least 25 dry fits already. But once the first batch of methacrylate was mixed and we had 40 minutes on the clock, things began to go downhill.
Don’t worry – it all worked out in the end. But, if you want to see the pitfalls we ran into, make sure to tune in!

Enjoy!

CATAMARAN BUILD – Can 4 People Lift A Transom Into Place? (MJ Sailing – Ep 211)

With only 4 people, we manage to lift our 25 ft, 300 pound transom into place.

In this week’s episode, we focus on not only lifting the transom to get it up to the bridge deck, but find what’s necessary to get it to, more or less, fit like a glove.

We have four people and a set of scaffolding, but you’ll have to tune in to find out how we use it!

One thing we did realize is that our two aft bulkheads were just a little too high, but we needed the transom in place to figure out exactly how much to cut down and where. So, guess who gets to slide into a space just big enough to fit their body so they can make the markings on the bulkheads?

We hope you enjoy!

CATAMARAN BUILD – How Many Guys Does It Take To Carry A Transom? (MJ Sailing – Ep 210)

We’re on days 4 and 5 of having Ryan and Burt come to help us, and we are just knocking all kinds of projects out!

After having bonded the sill on the bridge deck, we can then, finally, remove the supports from underneath the boat. What it also allows us to to is bond in the lower beam, which connects the two pieces of the bridge deck together – which was bonded back in the spring.

Then there is the biggest project ahead of us – getting the transom bonded on. But before we can get that far, we need to get it in the tent first. It’s too big and heavy to go up and over – so – any ideas of how we did it? 😀

Enjoy!

CATAMARAN BUILD – Glossing Up Our Interior (MJ Sailing – Ep 209)

Let’s start distracting from that green foam, by adding shiny molded pieces to the build.

After last week’s boat show feature, we’re now jumping back in a time a few weeks to late September, where Matt and I begin the first step of what is going to help us get our transom on. By bonding in our sill, which separates the cockpit from the salon, we add a lot of strength to the bridge deck and really set it in place. There’s a few steps needed to strengthen it before it goes down, but when that time does come, we have new help!!

Our new friend Ryan, and his friend Burt, managed to schedule two weeks to come out and help us with the build. Our main goal during their time with us was to get the 25ft wide transom bonded on, but as you’ll see over the next few episodes, there’s just a few steps we need to take before we get there.

Enjoy!

STEALING Ideas From MILLION DOLLAR Yachts!!! – Annapolis Boat Show 2021 (MJ Sailing – Ep 208)

We’re stepping foot on multiple million dollar yachts – and taking all their great ideas!!

Annapolis Boat Show 2021 is in full swing, and just like any other visitor, Matt and I are there to talk to vendors and tour all the boats we wish we could claim as our own. But in honesty, we’re still very excited to be working on the build of our own catamaran – just incorporating some design aspects of the higher end builds out there.

At the Annapolis show, we try to tour as many catamarans as possible, gaining every idea of what we might like as a home builder. What we realized in the process, is that although the Outremer 45 is the closest to the Max Cruise in space and design layout (in the hulls), the Balance 485 and 526, as well as the Kinetic 54, are closest to the build materials we’re using, as well as their minimalistic design.

Take a tour with us as we walk through these different boats, and take away the things we would like to add to our catamaran build. There’s still two years left until we’re finished, but some of these aspects needs to be incorporated right away if we decide to use them!

We hope you enjoy!!

CATAMARAN BUILD – These Chainplates Will NEVER Break!! (MJ Sailing – Ep 207)

We work on putting the final floor into The Hull Fame, and reinforce the area around our chainplates – which will then allow us to adhere all the bulkheads to the hull sides.

This week’s episode has us putting the new floor in for what will be our sail locker between bulkheads 2&3. Also known as, The Hull of Fame. 😉 We get the ok from our designer and engineer that we can switch around the webbing and the floor, which will give us just a bit more room in there for storage.

Next, we finally tackle the task of reinforcing the area behind the chainplates, which requires three sheets of unidirectional fiberglass, and two layers of 45/45 double biased. But now that it’s done, we can work on glassing the bulkheads to the hull side.

To throw a little excitement into our lives as well, we spend one afternoon hopping on The Marylander, where our friend Jason is captain. He shuttles us up the Severn River, were we have our first experience of catching crabs on a line. Fun to catch, and even more fun to eat!

We hope you enjoy!!
